On The Homosassa River

Area Information and Links

Homosassa is like a secret corner of the world on the Gulf of Mexico. 75 miles north of Tampa, 80 miles west of Orlando, The Homosassa River area offers great boating, fishing, swimming and nature activities. It is a peaceful respite from the big city ... yet close enough for day trips to or from Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Orlando, Gainesville, Sarasota, in an hour-and-a-half or less.

Homosassa Springs is a community of about 13,000 people. The river area does not get as hot as other, sweltering areas of Florida. This makes it a great place to visit, even in mid-summer.

The Homosassa River stretches nine miles from its spring source to the Gulf, and is between 3-10 feet deep. The water is a near constant 72 degrees. Swimming at the spring source is a popular activity. According to the State Parks, the springs produce millions of gallons of water every hour, and there are also many small saltwater springs along the river.

Freshwater fish you'll find in the Homosassa River include bream, largemouth bass and gar. Saltwater species include jacks, mullet, sheepshead, seatrout, redfish, tarpon, cobia and snook. Scalloping is popular in the shallow Gulf waters at the mouth of the River (July 1st to September 10th).

Nearby you'll find fine dining or casual dining -- or cook your day's catch in your kitchen at The Last Resort. Diving, golfing, and shopping are all nearby. We have an abundance of antique shops and specialty shops in our area, and a flea market for Saturday and Sunday shoppers.

Welcome to our State Park!Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is just a couple miles from The Last Resort. The Park offers "The Fish Bowl", a floating underwater observatory for unequalled, below-the-surface view of manatees and fish in the crystal clear spring environment. Three manatee programs, two Wildlife Encounters and an Alligator program are presented throughout the day allowing an opportunity to learn more about Florida's wildlife. A Reptile House and the Children's Education Center provide a chance for children to learn through hands-on activities.

Crystal River, FL is just six miles away and offers many of the same types of activities as the Homosassa area, fine dining and, of course, the Crystal River.

The Last Resort is just 2.5 miles from the US Hwy 19 string of shopping and restaurants. Close enough to be convenient, far enough away to be quiet and peaceful.
